لم تكن هناك عناية حقيقية في عالم الاستشراق بالحنبلية قبل هنري لاووست وتلميذه جورج مقدسي الذي تتحدث دراستهالتي بين أيدينا عن الحنابلة باعتبارهم الممثلين الأقدم لعقيدة أهل السُنّة-وهي تُعنى بمحاولة غولدزيهر في تقييمه لموقع المذهب الحنبلي والعقائد (السلفية والحنبلية) عند أهل السُنّة. فغولدزيهر كان همّه الحديث عن الأشعرية التي صارت التيار (الكلامي) الرئيس عند أهل السُنّة منذ ا لم تكن هناك عناية حقيقية في عالم الاستشراق بالحنبلية قبل هنري لاووست وتلميذه جورج مقدسي الذي تتحدث دراستهالتي بين أيدينا عن الحنابلة باعتبارهم الممثلين الأقدم لعقيدة أهل السُنّة-وهي تُعنى بمحاولة غولدزيهر في تقييمه لموقع المذهب الحنبلي والعقائد (السلفية والحنبلية) عند أهل السُنّة. فغولدزيهر كان همّه الحديث عن الأشعرية التي صارت التيار (الكلامي) الرئيس عند أهل السُنّة منذ القرن الخامس الهجري، أما زملاؤه فقد كانوا يعتبرون أنّ الأشعريةهي سبب رئيس في الانحطاط الذي نزل بالإسلام عامة والسني خاصة!
من جهة ثانية، أسس هنري لاووست لاتجاه جديد في دراسة المدرسة الحنبلية، وفي توجّهها العقدي والفقهي؛فكتب عن ابن تيمية وترجم نصوصاً له،كما قام بدراسة دور الحنابلة في التاريخ الاجتماعي والسياسي. أما جورج مقدسي فقد جرؤ على ما لم يجرؤ عليه أستاذه لاووست،وقام بنشر نصوص حنبلية في الحديث وأصول الفقه. ومع أنه لم يتجاهل الأشعرية بل كتب عنها، لكنه ظلّ يعتبرها أنها تمزج التقليد السُني بغيره، بخلاف الحنبلية الصافية. إن جورج مقدسي محقٌّ في أنّ الحنبلية تقع في أصل تكوين أهل السُنّة والجماعة، لذا كان عمله هذا مبدعاً ولافتاً وفيه أفكار كثيرة تستحق الاهتمام والنقاش.
