بیش از یک قرن پیش فروید با نوشتن اینکتاب، برای تفسیر خواب و رؤیا، که پیش از آن موضوع حدس و گمانهای عوامانه و سطحی بود، پایه و اسلوبیعلمی و نظاممند فراهمکرد و گامیبزرگ در زمینهٔ جستوجوی علمی در ذهن انسانی و فهم پدیدهها و مسائل ذهنی برداشت. بااینحال درآغاز کتاب پیشاز ارائهٔ نظریهٔ خویش، یعنی تلقّی خوابدیدن بهمنزلهٔ تحقّق آرزو، سابقهٔ تحلیل علمی رؤیاها را بهتفصیل بیش از یک قرن پیش فروید با نوشتن اینکتاب، برای تفسیر خواب و رؤیا، که پیش از آن موضوع حدس و گمانهای عوامانه و سطحی بود، پایه و اسلوبیعلمی و نظاممند فراهمکرد و گامیبزرگ در زمینهٔ جستوجوی علمی در ذهن انسانی و فهم پدیدهها و مسائل ذهنی برداشت. بااینحال درآغاز کتاب پیشاز ارائهٔ نظریهٔ خویش، یعنی تلقّی خوابدیدن بهمنزلهٔ تحقّق آرزو، سابقهٔ تحلیل علمی رؤیاها را بهتفصیل بررسیکرد که آننیز نمونهای از کار دقیق پژوهشگرانه و ارجشناسی تلاشهای دیگران بهشمار میآید. فروید خوابها را «بزرگراهی بهدرون ناخودآگاه» میدانست و عالمان پساز او نیز چونخود او از اینبزرگراه برای راهیافتن بهجهان پیچیدهٔ ذهن انسانی بهرههای بسیار بردند. روانکاوی و رواندرمانی امروز بیتردید بهکار پیشاهنگ و پیشتاز فروید دین بسیار دارد.
