إنّ البيوت السكنية القديمة التقليدية، كانت عادة لا تبنى بالمتانة المطلوبة، لذا فهي هذا الكتاب فريد في موضوعه لم تمتلك المكتبة العربية مثيلاً له، فهو يقدم دراسة معمّقة وتفصيلية عن العمارة العراقية والبغدادية على وجه الخصوص، ويعدّ المرجع الأساس لدراسة الجانب العماري للبيوت العراقية، لذلك اعتمد عليه كلّ من درس وكتب عن البيوت العراقية التقليدية، لذا فهو جدير أن يقدم إلى القارئ.
إنّ البيوت السكنية القديمة التقليدية، كانت عادة لا تبنى بالمتانة المطلوبة، لذا فهي تعرضت للسقوط والإندثار أسرع من المباني الضخمة ذات المتانة، فضلاً عن ذلك فقد تعرضت البيوت والأبنية التقليدية التراثية لعملية تهديم واسعة؛ والأنكى أن الدولة العراقية هي التي قامت بأغلب تلك الأعمال، حدث ذلك خلال العقود الثمانية الماضية في كل مناطق العراق، خصوصاً خلال الأربعين سنة الماضية بحجج واهية، نلاحظ اليوم، في كثير من المواقع، أن التقاليد القديمة للبناء اختفت وحل مكانها البناء الغربي، لقد طغت الحضارة الأوروبية على مختلف جوانب الحياة وهي تقضي على كل ما هو قديم.
لقد أخذنا من الغرب طراز البناء غافلين عن إهتمامهم الكبير - إلى درجة التقديس، بالتراث الحضاري، من فناء وبناء والمحافظة على ما هو قديم، مهما كان نوعه، لقد حفظ لنا الغرب تراثنا العريق في القدم لذا نرى متاحفهم اليوم أصبحت مرآة لماضينا.
