لا شك في أنّ القارئ المسلم قد تعوّد سماع الدعوة إلى الإجتهاد بصفته ضرورة يفرضها الدين ويمليها العصر في آن، ونحن نروم بهذه المحاولة المتواضعة الإسهام في تسجيم هذه الدعوة. إلا أنّنا مضطرون إلى رفع التباس خطير كثيراً ما يوقع في سوء التفاهم وفي حوار الصمّ.
فالمجتهد قديماً كان محلّ تقليد العامة، ومجتهد اليوم بيدي مجرّد رأي ولا يلزم إلا صاحبه، والإجتهاد المطلوب اليوم ليس هو الإجتهاد المقيّد ولا الإجتهاد المطلق بمعناه الأصولي الفقهي، فذاك إجتهاد في إستنباط ما يسمّى بالأحكام الشرعيّة مما ليس فيه نصّ، وهو ينخرط في منظومة نرى أنّ بالإمكان تجاوزها بل نزعم أنّه غير ذي جدوى إن لم يكن مستحيلاً، اللهم إلا إذا حسبنا منه تلك "الحيل" التي يلجأ أصحابها من ورائها إلى إضفاء رداء يظنّونه إسلامياً على ما هو غير إسلامي، ويقعون لا محالة في الإستلاب من حيث لا يشعرون.
الإجتهاد المطلوب، إذن، تفكّر وتدبّر يهمّه الوفاء لجوهر الرسالة المحمّديّة ولا يخشى معارضة المسلّمات، بدعوى أنّها من "المعلوم من الدين بالضرورة"، متى كانت تستوجب المعارضة، كما لا سبيل إلى الإعتراض عليه بما قال فلان أو فلان، ما دام "لا ينظر إلى من قال بقدر ما ينظر إلى ما قال"، ولا يقدّس السلف بقدر ما يدافع من حقّ الخلف، ويقيننا أنّه قد آن الأوان لإرساء حوار في صميم المسائل المطروحة، يعرض عن القشور والحواشي ويتمسّك باللبّ والأصل.
يتضمن هذا العمل قسمين كبيرين، حاولنا في أوّلهما التعريف بخصائص الرسالة المحمّديّة من منظور يطمح إلى أن يكون وفيّاً لمقاصدها الأساسيّة وللحقيقة التاريخيّة في آن واحد، ثم بيّنا في القسم الثاني كيف فهم الناس هذه الرسالة والأسباب التي جعلتهم يؤوّلونها تأويلاً مخصوصاً من خلال نماذج من الإكرهات التي ألزمتهم بتأويل معيّن من بين التأويلات العديدة المتاحة نظريّاً، ومنها ما وُجد فعلاً ولكن لم يحظّ بالإنتشار وبالقبول على نطاق واسع.
