يدور الحديث في صفحات هذا الكتاب حول الإسلام، عن الرسالة، وعن الرسول الذي حمل الرسالة وبلغها، وعن وضع أسس الحضارة الإسلامية ونشأة هذه الحضارة وتطورها خلال ألف وأربعمائة سنة من عمر التاريخ. وفي مسيرة هذه الحضارة وتطورها مراحل وتقلبات: مرحلة النشأة والقوة والعطاء والإنجازات الكبيرة، ومرحلة ظهور العوامل المرضية التي ولّدت تمزقاً وشتاتاً، ثم مرحلة الضعف والجمود، ومرحلة الانكسار أمام الحضارة الغربية، وقد أتبع المؤلف ذلك بحديث سريع عن مستقبل الحضارة الإسلامية كما يراه كثيرون من أبنائها في مختلف الأقطار الإسلامية. ولقد حرص المؤلف منذ البداية على التزام الموضوعية، وإعطاء صورة صادقة للأحداث، ومما ساعده على ذلك أنه تناول القضايا العامة والمواقف الكبرى وكلها مشهورة ومعروفة.
يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى تقديم الإسلام منذ بدء الدعوة، عبر الرسول الأعظم محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ورسالته الخالدة، ويتحدث عن بناء الإسلام الاجتماعي، وتطوره السياسي والفكري، مكتفياً أحياناً باللمحة الدالة، وأحياناً أخرى محللاً ومتعمقاً عند النقاط المهمة في مسيرة الإسلام عبر العصور.
ويعرض المؤلف بإسهاب واضح العقيدة الإسلامية، وأسس بناء الدولة والمجتمع من خلال النصوص والأصول الإسلامية الموثوقة، كما أنه يقدم فكراً إسلامياً بكثير من الجرأة وروح التجديد، متجاوباً مع مشكلات الإنسان المعاصر في إطار مجتمع الدولة الإسلامية الحديثة، وفي إطار العلاقات الدولية بتياراتها الصاخبة والمتلاطمة، ثم ينظر إلى المستقبل نظرة لا ينعدم فيها التفاؤل والأمل.
والمؤلف في هذا الكتاب يخاطب المسلم العادي، والمسلم القليل المعرفة بالإسلام، كما يخاطب غير المسلم، ليقدم لهم الإسلام كما هو، وكما يجب أن يعرفوه معرفة حقيقية وشاملة.
