يمثل المعنى النتيجة المرجوة من كل نص أو رسالة، وهو خلاصة ما يود المرسل أن ينقله للمتلقي، ولكن هذا المعنى قد لا يتحقق من اللفظ فقط، فهناك الظروف المحيطة بالحدث الكلامي، وموجهات المعنى الداخلية والخارجية للمرسل وللجماعة التي ينتمي إليها، وهناك ممكنات التلقي التي تسعف معنى الرسالة، وتحرك دوافعها في اتجاهات مختلفة.
إن اللفظ وحده قد لا يكون قادراً على تقديم المعنى الإجمالي، أو -
يمثل المعنى النتيجة المرجوة من كل نص أو رسالة، وهو خلاصة ما يود المرسل أن ينقله للمتلقي، ولكن هذا المعنى قد لا يتحقق من اللفظ فقط، فهناك الظروف المحيطة بالحدث الكلامي، وموجهات المعنى الداخلية والخارجية للمرسل وللجماعة التي ينتمي إليها، وهناك ممكنات التلقي التي تسعف معنى الرسالة، وتحرك دوافعها في اتجاهات مختلفة.
إن اللفظ وحده قد لا يكون قادراً على تقديم المعنى الإجمالي، أو المحدد للرسالة، بمعنى أن الألفاظ قد تتيح عدة خيارات للرسالة الواحدة، ولكن السياق الذي يحكم مجريات الرسالة، ويتحكّم في معطياتها، وبواعثها، ومنطلقاتها، وأهدافها يحدد طبيعة هذا المعنى، ويتحكم في إقصاء الاحتمالات الأخرى، عن طريق دعم المقترح الأكثر بروزاً وحضوراً.
