وكتابه هذا يوحي بغزارته المعرفية، وقدراته على التنظير وتحديد الموقف الجمالي من الفيض التشكيلي الهائل الذي تميز به النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين-أي منذ نهاية الحرب العالمية الثانية.
وإذا كان هذا الكتاب من المؤلفات المهمة والنادرة في موضوعه باللغة الإنكليزية فإنه، في ترجمته العربية، الكتاب الوحيد الذي يعالج الحركات الفنية الجديدة في العالم بهذا الاتساع، وهذا العمق، مع استخدام المصطلح الذي لا يستطيع الناقد دونه أن ينفذ على نحو عقلاني مفهوم، إلى خضم التداخلات والتمردات الأسلوبية والفكرية في النتاج التشكيلي المعاصر.. في فترة ما بعد الحداثة.
