تتناول القصة حياة أربعة من المسنين، والذين لأسباب مختلفة انتهى بهم المطاف في مأ في الشمس العتيقة واحدة من الروايات الأولى في حياة هيرمان هسه، فقد انتهى من كتابتها في عام 1908 ونشرت لأول مرة في عام 1914، وقد وصفت دار النشر "کویوقي کانیون برس" هذه الرواية، التي سبقت أعمال هيسه التي أكسبته شهرته، بأنها "الرواية المفقودة" التي تم تعد طباعتها أو ترجمتها إلى اللغات العالمية مجددا
تتناول القصة حياة أربعة من المسنين، والذين لأسباب مختلفة انتهى بهم المطاف في مأوى للفقراء قرب مدينة جير برساو الألمانية الصغيرة، مسقط رأس الكاتب. لتبدو معها الرواية كنسيج بستشف به هسه مدارج صباه، وملكة روحه، ومآلات شيخوخته في عالمه المتداعي، حتى بدت وكأنها أولى الرسوم على جدران السجن النفسي.
