تتوزع محتويات هذا الكتاب عدة محاور: منها محور القضايا الفكرية العامة كما فى المقالة الافتتحاية عن حيرة الفكر بين الشرق والغرب ومنها المحور التراثى الذى يحاول النظر إلى الماضى بعيون معاصرة كما فى مقالات .. التوحيدى كاتب الخبرة الوجودة وألف ليلة وليلة ومحمد على بين التاريخ والفن، ومنها محور الأدب المقارن الذى يتتبع صورة أدبائنا فى مرايا الغرب وصور أدباء الغرب وفلاسفته فى مرايا العرب ومحور الدرس النقدى لشخصيات أدبية من أجيال مختلفة تبدأ بطه حسين وتنتهى بهمر نجم مروراً بالعقاب وهيكل وأمين الخولى والحكيم ومحفوظ وحقى وغيرهم ومنها المحور الفلسفى الذى يتوقف عند زكى نجيب وأحمد فؤاد الأهوانى وحسن حنفى، ومحور الفن التشكيلى فى المقالة الخاصة بمارجوفيون. كتبت هذه الدراسات على امتداد عدد من السنين واصطنعت فيها مناهج نقدية مختلفة إذ كان الموضوع هو الذى يملى اسلوب التناول.
