يُعني هذا الكتاب برصد كثير من ظواهر ومظاهر الهشاشة التي أضحت سمة من سمات عصرنا الحديث تلف المساحة الأكبر من مصطلحات وتسميات وأفكار وقيم وسلوكيات ونتاجات الإنسان المعاصر، وبمقدار ما تبدو هذه الظواهر محكمة ومتزنة في شكلها الخارجي مما يوجب إنخداع الكثيرين بها وجريهم خلف سرابها فإنها تنطوي في داخلها وفي عمقها على حالات من الضعف، أو "الهشاشة" كما يحلو للمفكر المستقبلي "جاك أتال يُعني هذا الكتاب برصد كثير من ظواهر ومظاهر الهشاشة التي أضحت سمة من سمات عصرنا الحديث تلف المساحة الأكبر من مصطلحات وتسميات وأفكار وقيم وسلوكيات ونتاجات الإنسان المعاصر، وبمقدار ما تبدو هذه الظواهر محكمة ومتزنة في شكلها الخارجي مما يوجب إنخداع الكثيرين بها وجريهم خلف سرابها فإنها تنطوي في داخلها وفي عمقها على حالات من الضعف، أو "الهشاشة" كما يحلو للمفكر المستقبلي "جاك أتالي" أن يسميها، مذكراً بأن "الهشاشة" أضحت ميزة عامة للأوضاع، والأدوات، والمساكن، والمؤسسات والوظائف، والعلاقات الإجتماعية، والأزواج، والمهن، والمشاهير، والكتب، والتحف الفنية، والمعلومات، والذاكرات، والثقافات، والأمم، والتحديات أيضاً.
ولكن رغم كل تلك الهشاشات فإن الكاتب لا يريد أن يكون سوداوياً وصاحب نظرة تشاؤمية، لأنه يعتقد - ولا يجد مناصاً من أن يعتقد - أن من وراء حطام الهشاشات لا بد أن يلد فجر جديد بدت تباشيره تلوح في الأفق العالمي لتهمس في كل الآذان: إنَّ مَوْعِدهُمُ الصُّبْحُ أَلَيْسَ الصُّبْحُ بِقَرِيبِ.
