البؤساء" رواية اجتماعية قصد بها هيجو إلى التنبيه على المظالم التي يرزح تحت عبئها المعذبون في الأرض باسم النظام حيناً، وباسم الشعب دائماً. أرادها صاحبها معرضاً لأفكاره الديمقراطية ونزاعاته التحررية وجسد فيها تاريخ فرنسة في حقبة من أخطر الحقب في حياة فرنسة وأوروبة على عهدي نابوليون بونابرت ولويس فيليب.
قدم لها مؤلفها بـ"كلمة أولى" نقتطف منها قوله: "...ما دامت مشكلات العصر الث البؤساء" رواية اجتماعية قصد بها هيجو إلى التنبيه على المظالم التي يرزح تحت عبئها المعذبون في الأرض باسم النظام حيناً، وباسم الشعب دائماً. أرادها صاحبها معرضاً لأفكاره الديمقراطية ونزاعاته التحررية وجسد فيها تاريخ فرنسة في حقبة من أخطر الحقب في حياة فرنسة وأوروبة على عهدي نابوليون بونابرت ولويس فيليب.
قدم لها مؤلفها بـ"كلمة أولى" نقتطف منها قوله: "...ما دامت مشكلات العصر الثلاث-الحط من قدر الرجل بالفقر، وتحطيم كرامة المرأة بالجوع، وتقزيم الطفولة بالجهل -لما تحل بعد، ما دام الاختناق الاجتماعي ممكناً ما يزال... ما دام على ظهر هذه الأرض جهل وبؤس، فإن كتباً مثل هذا الكتاب لا يمكن أن تكون غير ذات غناء".
وبعد، فإن ترجمة الأستاذ منير البعلبكي لهذه الرواية قد أضحت ترجمة كلاسيكية بكل ما في الكلمة من معنى. وقد أكسبته هذه الترجمة، وترجمات كثيرة أخرى، لقب "شيخ المترجمين" الذي أطلقه عليه عميد الأدب العربي الدكتور طه حسين
