لعب الصابئة، رغم كونهم طائفة دينية صغيرة، دوراً ملحوظاً في تطور الحياة الروحية والفكرية في بلاد ما بين النهرين خلال ظهور المسيحية وانتشارها أو بعد ظهور الإسلام، ولا سيما بعد ازدهار الحضارة العربية-الإسلامية أيام العباسيين.
وقد تعرضوا للاضطهاد في العهود المختلفة وانكمشوا على أنفسهم، غير أنهم ورغم قلة عددهم، ورغم القهر الذي حاصرهم طوال القرون عادوا في العقود الأخيرة لينكشفوا لعب الصابئة، رغم كونهم طائفة دينية صغيرة، دوراً ملحوظاً في تطور الحياة الروحية والفكرية في بلاد ما بين النهرين خلال ظهور المسيحية وانتشارها أو بعد ظهور الإسلام، ولا سيما بعد ازدهار الحضارة العربية-الإسلامية أيام العباسيين.
وقد تعرضوا للاضطهاد في العهود المختلفة وانكمشوا على أنفسهم، غير أنهم ورغم قلة عددهم، ورغم القهر الذي حاصرهم طوال القرون عادوا في العقود الأخيرة لينكشفوا من جديد عن حيوية، ودخلوا الحياة الاجتماعية في العراق الحديث بفاعلية تفوق الكمّ السكاني والنشاط الاقتصادي.
ورغم ذلك فالمسألة الميزانية لم تحظ باهتمام مراكز البحث العربية والإسلامية رغم أهميتها في فهم تطوّر الفكر في المنطقة العربية في حقبة معينة قبل وبعد ظهور الإسلام. لذا جاء عمل المؤلف في هذا الكتاب ليغطي قدر الاستطاعة ذاك الجانب المُغْفَل من الناحية الاعتقادية لهذه الطائفة، وقد وجد صعوبة في عمله، وهو المندائي، لأن البحث يتطلب معرفة باللغة المندائية والسريانية والعبرية والإغريقية فكان عليه أن يتناول الأدب الديني لطائفته من خلال ما ترجم إلى اللغات الأخرى.
وقد أخذت دراسته الشكل التالي: تقديم كشف بالأدب المندائي، ثم تبع ذلك تمهيد لشرح موضوعه وفصول ثمانية تناول فيها النقاط التالية: 1-العالم القديم في العهد الهلينسي، مقدمة تاريخية، 2-المندائية والدين البابلي، 3-المندائية وطوائف البحر الميت، 4-المندائية ويحيى بن زكريا، 5-المندائية طائفة غنوصية، 6-الصابئة المندائيون في ميسان، 7-المندائيون بين الغرب والشرق، 8-خاتمة.
