تضارب الآراء في مواقفه الوطنية، واتهمته الرجعية بالمروق من الدين بسبب طروحاته النهضوية المستنيرة والعقلانية.
أثار اغتياله عام 1940 اضطراباً في النفوس، ولا يزال عبد الرحمن الشهبندر
