كان مشروع سعدي يوسف حذراً متوجساً من الخبرة الجاهزة في التجربة الشعرية. تلك التي تتلبس طابع التأثر الصاعق بموجات التجديد الغربية. وكانت النزعة الغنائية الرومانسية تعزز لديه الصلة بالواقع. وحين تطور مشروعه تخفف من عاطفية تلك النزعة ولكنها بقيت ترافق قصيدته. وقد كان شعره المعادل العقلاني للتجديد المندفع. وهو أفاد من اندفاعة القصيدة الطليعية - الستينية اللبنانية والعراقية على وجه التحديد -في علاقتها اللاعقلانية باللغة فكان مشروعه متواضعاً. يحاول أن يشتغل على اللغة كناقلة للمشاعر. أو لكونها تعبيراً مباشراً نظيفاً متخففاً من متطلبات البلاغة الجديدة. النص الشعري يمس الأشياء، بأنامل مرهفة. إنه يومئ ولا يوجه. وفي النص انصات، محاولة فعلية للانصات، لكنه الانصات إلى المبهم، إلى الأصوات غير المسموعة.
