تعددت المختارات، والمنتخبات الشعرية في العصر الحديث تعددًا يتناسب مع تعدد بيئات الأدب العربي الحديث والمعاصر. في رحلة تجاوزت نصف القرن، وتنوعت أزمانها فتنوعت مدارسها، وتعددت أماكنها بين مصر: نشأة وحياة، وكثير من الدول العربية: إعارة، أو مؤتمرات، أو أسفارًا، وقد فتح هذا التنوع أمامي آفاقًا جديدة.
ووجدتني أمام ما أملك من حصيلة مختارة أنتقي منها، وأصنف، وأختار، دون أن أحار، فحذفت الكثير، أو أرجأت اختياره، وأضفت الكثير مما هو وليد الحقبة الراهنة من عمري، وقد جاوزت السبعين، وقرين خبرتي المتجددة بذلك الفن، وتلك البيئات؛ حيث أصبح بيد يدي- على وجه التحديد- ملامح وجوه ذلك الفن العريق؛ الشعر العربي، بأصواته، وقسماته، وألوانه، وأطيافه.
من هنا كان في علمي المتواضع ما يشبه الحصر لما صدر من مختارات الشعر العربي الحديث في الوطن العربي كله، كما هو مثبت بالموسوعة، وزاد عددًا فيما أعد من طبعة جديدة؛ فتساءلت: هل سأضيف جديدًا بعد صدور مئات المختارات في كل شبر من أرض العرب؟
وكانت الإجابة في "العيون"، أي اختيار ما أجمعت عليه، أو كادت، الذائقة العربةي المعاصرة من شعر شاع وذاع، واشتهر وانتشر، بحيث إذا ذكر الشعر ذكر الشاعر، بمثل ما يذكر القائل بقوله، والمقول بقائله، ثم أضفت إلى ذلك ما حصرته مما اشتهر من الشعر الذي غني، وشاع، وطار في الآفاق على ألسنة المطربين، وألحان الملحنين؛ فكان فصل (الغناء بالشعر) جامعًا أشهر ما غني، وشنف الآذان، وهكذا كانت: "عيون الشعر العربي الحديث".
