يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى دراسة أهم المعالم البارزة لشخصيّة الحلاج لا من الناحية الشخصيّة بل من الناحية الفكريّة، والمنحى السياسي لهذه الشخصيّة وأثره البالغ على المعتقدات الفكريّة التي كتب عنها الكثير، فقد طغت صوفيّته، وهي من نوع خاص جداً تتعارض مع كثير من الثوابت الإسلاميّة، على أهم معالم شهرته بشكل مثير وملفت للنظر، فرغم وجود إشارات لا تقبل النقاش حول انتمائه للإسماعيليّة – الباطنيّة، وكونه أحد ركائزها داخل التنظيم القرمطي الإسماعيلي، إلا أن دهاءه وعبقريته وكثرة تلونه طغى على هذا الجانب عند معظم الدارسين لسيرته، فأهملوا كل أفكاره وكتبه، وتعلقوا بقضيّة صلبه وإعدامه، ووضعوها في إطار عاطفي مثير على أنها سبب موته الدرامي.
ويرجع سبب الاختلاف بيت التيارات الإسلاميّة حول شخصيّة الحلاج لعدم النظر بشموليّة إلى مجمل حياته وأفكاره ككل، فنادراً ما تعرض المتعاطفون معه إلى مراميه السياسيّة وأفكاره خارج ما نسميه بالتصوّف الحلولي، لذلك فقد أخذ المؤلف في نظر الاعتبار التغيرات الاجتماعيّة والفكريّة التي حدثت في المجتمع الإسلامي بعد زوال الدولة الأمويّة ونشوء الدولة العباسيّة (132ه) واضمحلال الدور العربي في كيان الدولة الإسلاميّة وبروز التيار الفارسي (الأعجمي)، والذي كان من الركائز الأساسيّة للدولة العباسيّة، كأبرز العوامل في ظهور تيارات فكريّة بدوافع سياسيّة، وما صاحب ذلك من نشوء تيارات فكريّة وعادات وتقاليد لم يألفها المجتمع الإسلامي ثم صارت الأرض الخصبة للباطنيّة وحركات التصوف الحلولي، حاول المؤلّف إلقاء الضوء على تصاعد المد الباطني – الشعوبي لارتباطه بالموضوع قلباً وقالباً، والذي لم يغفر مطلقاً للعرب المسلمين زوال المجد الفارسي الغابر الذي دام لأكثر من ألف عام، فنشأت الحركة الباطنيّة، حيث كانت الإسماعيليّة ذروة سنامها وعملت بكل الوسائل لتقويض الدين من داخله وباسمه!، وهذا الصراع من أشد الصراعات التي تعرضت لها الحضارة الإسلاميّة ككل، فكراً ومجتمعاً ونظاماً سياسياً.
