"كثيرون حاولوا تصوير الحرب اللبنانية على أنها «حرب الآخرين على أرض لبنان»، وكثيرون خاضوا في شروحٍ مفصّلة عن كونها حرباً بين مجموعاتٍ طائفيةٍ وعرقية يجمعها بلدٌ واحد، لكنّ قلّةً قليلة جداً حاولت طرح فهمٍ بديل لتاريخ لبنان وحقيقة ما جرى خلال الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية التي امتدّت بين العامين 1975 و1990.
يقدّم هذا الكتاب رؤية جديدة تعتمد وجهة نظر مختلفة عن تحليلات المدرسة الاستشراقية الفرنسية والأنكلوساكسونية والماركسية الفرنسية، وتحاجج بأن الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية كانت في جوهرها نوعاً من إرهاب مارسته على الشعب اللبناني الطوائفُ التي تمثّل في حقيقتها مؤسسات الدولة اللبنانية. وبالتالي، فإن هذا الإرهاب لم يكن في جوهره إرهاباً مارسته طائفةٌ ضدّ أخرى، بل كان بالدرجة الأولى إرهاباً مارسته النخب، الضالعة بالدولة ومؤسساتها والمتحكّمة فيها، ضدّ الطبقتين الوسطى والفقيرة، بغية إخضاعهما وتطويعهما باستخدام العنف.
وهكذا، يتبع د. جمال واكيم في كتابه أسلوباً أكاديمياً، ويأخذ بأبحاث وفكر كل من ماركس، وأنطونيو غرامشي، والمؤرخ الأميركي بيتر غران، والمؤرخين البريطانيين إريك هوبسباوم وبول كينيدي، وكمال الصليبي، ومهدي عامل، وغيرهم، ويرتكز أيضاً على وثائق وشهاداتٍ حيّة، ليعالج:
• الأسباب المنطقية والظروف المفضية إلى إشعال الحرب، بالاستناد إلى رؤية لينين وتجربته في الثورة، وإلى نظريات نعوم تشومسكي،
• جذور هيمنة الإقطاع السياسي والصراع الطبقي في لبنان،
• تأثير الجوار القريب والبعيد للبنان في مجريات الأحداث ومآل الأمور،
• أساليب فرض كل طائفةٍ لهيمنتها، على الأقل في محيطها الجغرافي، عبر عمليات «التنظيف والتطهير»،
• الإرهاب الذي مارسته كلّ من الطوائف المسيحية، والدرزية، والشيعية، والسنّية، ممثلةً بزعمائها، ضدّ أبناء الوطن الواحد.
• قصصاً جرى التغاضي عنها تكشف ممارسات هؤلاء الزعماء الدموية."
