مشكلة الجندي الأمريكي وخسارته الروحية هي في المفارقة التي يعيشها حين يكون "العدو" شعباً أعزل يعيش في قرى ومدن وقصبات على بعد آلاف الأميال عن الشواطئ الأمريكية ، ودون أن يكون لهذا الشعب عداوة مع الشعب الأمريكي . كما أنه يحارب جماعات من هذا الشعب لا يرتدون حتى زياً خاصاً فهم ليسوا جيشاً نظامياً وإنما هم رجال يدافعون عن أرضهم ، وهم بهذه الصفات لا يمكن أن يزعم الجندي الأمريكي مشكلة الجندي الأمريكي وخسارته الروحية هي في المفارقة التي يعيشها حين يكون "العدو" شعباً أعزل يعيش في قرى ومدن وقصبات على بعد آلاف الأميال عن الشواطئ الأمريكية ، ودون أن يكون لهذا الشعب عداوة مع الشعب الأمريكي . كما أنه يحارب جماعات من هذا الشعب لا يرتدون حتى زياً خاصاً فهم ليسوا جيشاً نظامياً وإنما هم رجال يدافعون عن أرضهم ، وهم بهذه الصفات لا يمكن أن يزعم الجندي الأمريكي أنه استطاع "تدمير العدو" كما تعهد في قسمه العسكري ، لأنه حين يقتل واحداً ينبع له عشرة . ولا يمكن أن يزعم النصر ، فهذا ليس جيشاً نظامياً سيرفع راية بيضاء ويدخل معه في مفاوضات هدنية بين منتصر ومهزوم . إنه يقاتل جيش أشباح ، لا تختلف هيئاتهم عن الناس الذين يراهم في الصباح ، سمر الوجوه ، ربما يبتسمون في وجهه ، ويمضون في سبيلهم . وفي الليل لا يعرف من أين تأتي الضربات
هذا هو المأزق الذي يعيشه رامبو في العراق . ولهذا تكون يوميات الجنود وأفكارهم وخواطرهم واعترافاتهم ورسائلهم ومدوناتهم ، نافذة تطل على أرواحهم الضائعة في بلاد الرافدين وتكسر الأسطورة
