تركنا حماداً وسلمان– في آخر الجزء الأول من هذه الرواية– وقد غلب عليهما اليأس في مكة بعد أن تكبدا مشاق الأسفار ولم يظفرا بشيء مما كانا يأملان فيه, وخصوصاً «حماداً» فإنه أصبح يائساً تتقاذف به عوامل الحب من جهة وعوامل الشهامة من جهة أخرى, وهو بين ذلك لا يرجو لقاء والده ولا يأمل في الظفر بحبيبته, فكان كلما تصور ذلك ثارت الحمية في رأسه وعظم عليه أن يعود إلى البلقاء, فحدثته نفسه أن يبتعد عن الناس, ويأوي إلى مكان لا يعرفه فيه أحد, أو أن يقيم في دير أو نحوه, لأن الحياة أصبحت في نظره شراً من الموت.
أما «سلمان» فإنه أدرك حال سيده, وعلم ما هو فيه من اليأس, فثارت في نفسه عاطفة الشهامة,وعول على أن يبذل نفسه في سبيل تعزيته, فخرج من الغرفة ذات صباح متظاهراً بحاجة يفتش عنها.
