"اقترب في خطوات قوية رشيقة تلمع في عينيه نظرة جريئة نافذة. التقت عيناهما وهو يدخل المحل فحدجه القادم بنظرة قوية أدرك منها أنه تذكره ثم حول عنه وجهه المستطيل المتناسق وهو يكاد يبتسم ثم مضى نحو ركن عصير الفاكهة هو هو دون غيره، أيام الحرب الكالحة، ليلة قبض على الشاب فشهد هو التحقيق معه، بصفته الرسمية والحزبية، حتى مطلع الفجر. وكان الشاب جريئاً وعنيفاً ولم ينته التحقيق معه إلى "اقترب في خطوات قوية رشيقة تلمع في عينيه نظرة جريئة نافذة. التقت عيناهما وهو يدخل المحل فحدجه القادم بنظرة قوية أدرك منها أنه تذكره ثم حول عنه وجهه المستطيل المتناسق وهو يكاد يبتسم ثم مضى نحو ركن عصير الفاكهة هو هو دون غيره، أيام الحرب الكالحة، ليلة قبض على الشاب فشهد هو التحقيق معه، بصفته الرسمية والحزبية، حتى مطلع الفجر. وكان الشاب جريئاً وعنيفاً ولم ينته التحقيق معه إلى إدانة ولكنه أُرسل إلى المعتقل ولبث فيه حتى إقالة الوزارة ترى ماذا يفعل الآن؟ وهل يحظى في العهد الجديد بمنزلة سامية؟ أم لا يزال ثائراً؟ ولِمَ ابتسم؟ من المؤكد أنه تذكّره فهل يتوقّع من ناحيته مفاجأة سيئة؟ وقرّر أن يطرده عن خاطره ولكنه التفت نحو ركن الفاكهة بدافع لم يستطع مقاومته فرآه واقفاً متجهاً إلى داخل المحل قابضة يمناه على كوب من عصير المانجو، ويرنو إليه بنظرة استطلاع وتأمل وفي عينيه شبه ابتسامة ساخرة. وأعاد رأسه إلى الخارج وهو من الضيق في غاية، وكأن في الماضي من خلال هذه النظرة يطارده. وما لبث أن قام ثم غادر المحل ماضياً إلى الكورنيش رأساً. ولم يخطر له أن يعود إلى البيت، بل دخيل إليه أنه لم يعد له بيت على الإطلاق، ومال بعد مشية غير قصيرة إلى الميدان ثم جلس على أريكة تحت تمثال "سعد زغلول". على الرغم من تقادم الذين على روايته "السمّان والخريف" إلا أن نجيب محفوظ ما زال يُقرأ بشغف، وما زال عمله الروائي ذاك يجد مساحة واسعة إن بالنسبة لمتعة القراءة أو للتحليل النفسي أو للأسلوب الأدبي الروائي الرائع، ناهيك عن تحوّل روايته تلك إلى عمل درامي سينمائي لاقى من النجاح لاقى. لن يقف الزمن حجر عثرة بين القارئ وبين هذا العمل الروائي إن من حيث الموضوع أو من حيث المعالجة أو من حيث الأسلوب، فمن خلال أسلوبه الشيق، السهل الممتنع، يمتع نجيب محفوظ القارئ بموضوع هو إلى حد ما تاريخي سياسي اجتماعي شيّق تتداخل في ثناياه وقائع حياتية ما زال إنسان هذا العصر يعايشها ويتعايش معها بكل دقائقها لا يوجد مجنون يفكر جادا في إشعال حرب عالمية من أجل نقطة لا تكاد ترى فوق خريطة العالم.
