"أيها القمر الذي يملأ أرجاء مصر الجديدة في شهر المحرم، أيها القمر، أيها القمر، بلغ ليلاي في بغداد أني أعاني آلام الكتمان، بلغ ليلاي أن سري لا يزال مكتوماً بعد... وآه ثم آه من عذاب الكتمان! كان غرامي بك يا ليلي قدراً من الأقدار، وكان مكتوباً بخط الدمع على أسارير الجبين، وكم توقرت يا ليلي لأصد الجوى عن قلبك الخفاق. فإن كنت ضيعت عليك فرصة الفضيحة في غرامي فقد حفظت لك نعمة الصيانة من أراجيف السفهاء، وذلك أجمل ما تظفر به القلوب والنفوس، في زمن يكفر أهله بشريعة الحب أبشع الكفران. ولو كنت كتمت هواي عن الناس وحدهم لخف الأمر وهان، ولكني كتمت هواي عن ليلاي وضللتها أشنع تضليل، فهي لا تعرف اليوم مواقع هواي، ولا تفهم أني مفتون بها أعنف الفتون. سألتني ليلاي ذات مساء: أنا ليلاك يا دكتور؟ فأجبت علم ذلك عند علام الغيوب. وكان ذلك لأني كنت ألزم الأدب حين أراها مع أني أفضح نفسي فيما أنشر بالجرائد والمجلات، فهي تتوهم أن هواي عند غيرها من الليليات، وما أكثر أوهام الملاح! ومن ليلاي في العراق؟ هي ليلاي في العراق، هي أن العينين السوداوين، هي الإنسانة التي كانت تشتهي أن تكون نور بيتي في بغداد، هي الإنسانة التي اقترحت أن نفرق معاً في دجلة أو الفرات. وليتنا غرقنا معاً في دجلة أو الفرات!"
في هذا الكتاب تاريخ يفصل وقائع ليلى بين القاهرة وبغداد من سنة 1926 إلى سنة 1938 ويشرح جوانب من أسرار المجتمع وسرائر القلوب.
