مساءً انحنى بتثاقل ونظر، عبر النافذة النقية، إلى المدينة التي اغتسلت بالضباب. وضع الأوراق في صحن الفاكهة فوق المفرش البنفسجي المشغول بخيوط ذهبية. اعتدل منتظراً عود الكبريت أن يوصل النار إلى الأوراق. انتزع من كتابه الأخضر ورقة أخرى ناولها لرجل يقف خلفه. بدأ رذاذ المطر يرسم على الزجاج وجوهاً لا يعرفها. وجد نفسه وحيداً مرة أخرى يجلس على كرسي من خشب الأبنوس. أخرج عود كبريت جدي مساءً انحنى بتثاقل ونظر، عبر النافذة النقية، إلى المدينة التي اغتسلت بالضباب. وضع الأوراق في صحن الفاكهة فوق المفرش البنفسجي المشغول بخيوط ذهبية. اعتدل منتظراً عود الكبريت أن يوصل النار إلى الأوراق. انتزع من كتابه الأخضر ورقة أخرى ناولها لرجل يقف خلفه. بدأ رذاذ المطر يرسم على الزجاج وجوهاً لا يعرفها. وجد نفسه وحيداً مرة أخرى يجلس على كرسي من خشب الأبنوس. أخرج عود كبريت جديداً لأن الأول تبلل بقطرة مطر لا يعرف من أين أتت. أشعل العود وقرّبه من الأوراق إلا أن الرجل الذي خلفه سبقه وأشعل الكرسي.
