لا شكّ أن الأبحاث والمؤلّفات التي بدأت منذ مرحلة مبكرة من القرن العشرين الميلادي حول الجزيرة العربية، قد أنتجت دراسات علمية مستفيضة وهامّة، كشفت لنا الكثير من أسرارها وغموضها، إلاّ أنّ معظم الآراء والتفسيرات التي وردت فيها كانت دليلاً معبّراً عن الجدل الذي ما زال قائماً حول طبيعة المظاهر الحضارية فيها.
وعملنا هذا هو محاولة للبحث في أحد جوانب التراث الحضاري في الجزيرة العربية والمتعلّق بالمعبد مفهومه وتطوّره ووظيفته، في الفترة ما بين منتصف الألف الأوّل قبل الميلدا وحتّى قبيل ظهور الإسلام.
وتهدف إلى بيان أثر المفاهيم الدّينيّة لمجتمع الجزيرة قبل الإسلام في شكل المعبد ووظيفته، ومع قلّة مثل هذه الدراسات وندرتها فيما يخصٌ الجزيرة العربية، فإنّ الحياة الدينيّة لدى مجتمعها القديم من المعتذّر فهمها بوضوح، ممّا يدفع إلى التساؤل عن ماهية المفاهيم الدِّينيّة لدى العرب قبل الإسلام ومعنى بيت المعبود ومغزاه.
كما أنّ التفسير العلمي الموضوعي لهذا الإرث الحضاري يعمّق الصلة بين الماضي والحاضر، وعلى ذلك، ومن طبيعة وسمات التراث الحضاري للجزيرة العربية التي يرفدها منهلان محدّدان: الأوّل: محلي خاص، والثاني شرقي عام، فإنّ الحدود التاريخية والجغرافية التي اتبعها الباحث في هذه الدراسة ساعدت على تتبُّع التطوُّر المضطرد في المفاهيم الحضارية المتعلَّقة بالموضوع.
