رحلة أبي طالب خان من نوادر الرحل في العالمين في موضوعها وأسلوبها وبراعة كاتبها وشمول ملاحظاته، فالمألوف في عصره وقبله وبعده أن الأوروبيين كانوا يسيحون في بلاد الشرق ويكتبون في وصفه رحلاً وفي آثاره كتباً، ولا نزال نتسقط أخبار الشرق المتأخرة من رحل الأوروبيين فيه وخصوصاً أخبار العراق، أمَّا أنَّ شرقياً يسيح في بلاد أوروبة ويصفها هذا الوصف المسهب فيه، المحتوي على كلِّ غريب وط رحلة أبي طالب خان من نوادر الرحل في العالمين في موضوعها وأسلوبها وبراعة كاتبها وشمول ملاحظاته، فالمألوف في عصره وقبله وبعده أن الأوروبيين كانوا يسيحون في بلاد الشرق ويكتبون في وصفه رحلاً وفي آثاره كتباً، ولا نزال نتسقط أخبار الشرق المتأخرة من رحل الأوروبيين فيه وخصوصاً أخبار العراق، أمَّا أنَّ شرقياً يسيح في بلاد أوروبة ويصفها هذا الوصف المسهب فيه، المحتوي على كلِّ غريب وطريف، فضلاً عن التأريخ السياسي الذي عاصره الرحالة، فهذا من أندر النوادر في عصره ولذلك أسرع الإنكليز والفرنسيون والهولنديون إلى ترجمة الرحالة إلى لغاتهم، لوجدانهم فيها أوصافاً ومباحث وأموراً خاصة ببلادهم لم يجدوها عند كتَّابهم ورحاليهم، فإنَّ أبا طالب كان نافذ الملاحظة، منعم النظر، مثقفاً ثقافة شرقية عالية، قلَّماً يفوته ذكر شيء ممَّا وقع عليه بصره أو تناوله في أثناء السياحة فكره، وستبقى رحلته مثالاً لتأليف الرحلات والاستقصاء والشمول، ولقد أحسن تنظيمها وحبكها والظاهر لنا أنه كتبها مذكرات منفردة فلمَّا عاد إلى بلاده رتَّبها ونظَّمها وأحسن تأليفها، وأحال عند الحاجة إلى الربط بين أجزائها وأنبائها على ملاحظات متأخّرة قبل أن يلاحظها كما أحال على ملاحظات متقدّمة لاحظها، ففي الأوليات دليل على أن التأليف وقع بعد الارتحال.0
