فقد تسابقت الأمم بمختلف مللها ونحلها على توثيق أخبار عظمائها من علماء وأمراء ومفكرين، فقد أُلِفت في ذلك آلاف الكتب، حفاظاً على موروثها، ووفاءً لرجالها وعظمائها.
وقد حرص علماؤنا في البلاد المباركة على جمع أخبار رجالها، فكتبوا في ذلك الكثير أمثال المؤرخ ابن غنام في [تاريخ نجد] وابن بشر في [عنوان المجد في تاريخ نجد] و[تاريخ ابن لعبون] وغيرهم كثير...
ومن الذين وُفِقُوا في الكتابة في ذلك العلامة عبد الله بن عبد الرحمن البسام في كتابه الموسوم (علماء نجد خلال ثمانية قرون).
ولعل ما يميز هذا الكتاب أنه اقتصر فقط على ذكر العلماء، وبعض الأحداث السياسية التي لها إرتباط وثيق بترجمة هؤلاء الأعلام.
فجاء على ذكر مناقبهم، وذِكر مواقفهم، والكلام عن مشائخهم، والتركيز على جهودهم في الدعوة، خاصة الدعوة الإصلاحية دعوة الإمام المجدد محمد بن عبد الوهاب.
ولأهمية هذا الكتاب، قام المؤلف وإختصاره وإستخراج فوائده ثم جعلها في كتب وفصول وأبواب ليسهل الوصول إليها وعنونه: "الدرر المكنون من علماء نجد خلال ثمانية قرون".
