"الرسالة المستطرفة" هي بين كتب علوم الحديث والمحدثين كفهرست ابن النديم بين كتب العلوم الأخرى، قد اشتملت على أربعمائة وألف كتاب من مشهور كتب علوم الحديث، وعلى قريب من ستمائة ترجمة من مشهور تراجم علماء الحديث، وعلى قريب من المائتين من مشهور كتب علماء الحديث في الأندلس والمغرب، وعلى قريب من ستين ترجمة من مشهور تراجم المحدثين في الأندلس والمغرب، مع ذكر أسماء علماء الحديث في ال "الرسالة المستطرفة" هي بين كتب علوم الحديث والمحدثين كفهرست ابن النديم بين كتب العلوم الأخرى، قد اشتملت على أربعمائة وألف كتاب من مشهور كتب علوم الحديث، وعلى قريب من ستمائة ترجمة من مشهور تراجم علماء الحديث، وعلى قريب من المائتين من مشهور كتب علماء الحديث في الأندلس والمغرب، وعلى قريب من ستين ترجمة من مشهور تراجم المحدثين في الأندلس والمغرب، مع ذكر أسماء علماء الحديث في المشرق والمغرب، بكناهم، وألقابهم، وشهرتهم، ووفاتهم، وما لكل واحد منهم من كتاب، وفي الرسالة محدثون من القرن الثاني إلى القرن الرابع عشر.
فمن القرن الثاني: ستة عشر محدثاً، ومن الثالث: واحد وعشرون ومائة محدث، ومن الرابع: خمسة عشر ومائة محدث، ومن الخامس: خمسة وسبعون، ومن السادس: اثنان وأربعون، ومن السابع: ستة وأربعون، ومن الثامن: ثمانية وثلاثون، ومن التاسع: ثلاثون: ومن العاشر: تسعة عشر، ومن الحادي عشر: أحد عشر، ومن الثاني عشر: أربعة عشر، ومن الثالث عشر: سبعة، ومن الرابع عشر: قرننا الحالي أربعة محدثين.
والرسالة المستطرفة فريدة في بابها، لم يؤلف لها قبل مثيل، ولم يؤلف لها بعد شبيه، ومن أجل ذلك استهدفت بالتحقيق والتدقيق ومع ذلك ظلت ناقصة في كل طبعاتها، وذلك لحاجتها إلى فهارس تفصيلية وهذا ما دفع "محمد المنتصر بن محمد الكتاني" إلى إعادة تحقيقها في طبعتها هذه التي بين أيدينا والتي جاءت محتوية بالإضافة إلى التحقيق على فهارس متعددة الفهرس الأول: خصصه لمواضيع الرسالة، صحاحاً ومستخرجات، سنناً ومصنفات، معاجم ومشيخات، تراجم وروات، جرحاً وتعديلاً، تصحيحاً وتضعيفاً، أسانيداً ومتوناً، أصولاً ومصطلحات، رواية ودراية، إلقاء وتلقياً، كشفاً وتخاريج، والفهرس الثاني خصصه للكتب الحديث، الفهرس الثالث لتراجم المحدثين، الفهرس الرابع لكل محدث ومعه جميع كتبه، فمن شاء الكشف عن محدث ليعرفه ويعرف كم له من كتاب، كشف عنه في هذا الفهرس.
