يدور موضوع هذا الكتاب حول دراسة الحكم إزاء الآثار! وبتعبير أدق، دراسة القواعد "المعايير" التي تتكون، أحياناً واضحة وغالباً مهمة، والتي على أساسها يبنى الحكم الجمالي. وهكذا، فتطبيق هذه المعايير، هو ما يسمى النقد، وهو -كما ورد في موسوعة ليتريه- "فن الحكم على التراث الأدبي، والآثار الفنية...". هذه الأحكام القيمة، على أي مصطلح تقوم وتعتمد؟ في الواقع، نادرا ما يقوم حكم، إلا ويرتكز وعيياً على قاعدة أو مفهوم نقدي. فالمفاهيم الأساسية للنقد، تكونت منذ العصور الأولى، وصارت -عصراً بعد عصر- تنقض أو تتمم أو تستعاد. وهو هذا دأب الباحث في دراسته هذه، أن يعالج هذه المعايير الأساسية بالذات، ثم الاتجاهات الرئيسية التي نحاها النقد الفني الجمالي.
