قيل إن قوماً قالوا للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: أقريب ربنا فنناجيه، أم بعيد فنناديه. فنزلت هذه الآية: (أجيب دعوة الداع إذا دعا)، أي: أقبل عبادة من عبدني، فالدعاء: بمعنى العبادة، والإجابة بمعنى القبول. وقال ابن عطاء السكندري: إن للدعاء أركاناً، وأجنحة، وأسباباً، وأوقاتاً، فإن وافق أركانه: قوي، وإن وافق أجنحته: طار إلى السماء، وإن وافق أسبابه: نجح، وإن وافق مواقيته: فاز، فأركانه: حضور القلب والخشوع، وأجنحته: الصدق، وأسبابه: الصلاة على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، ومواقيته: الأسحار. وقال الرسول صلى الله عليه: "لمّا أهبط الله آدم إلى الأرض قام وُجَاه الله، فصلى ركعتين، فألهه الله هذا الدعاء: "اللهم إنك تعلم سريرتي وعلانيتي، فاقبل معذرتي، وتعلم حاجتي، فاعطني سؤلي، وتعلم ما في نفسي فاغفر لي ذنبي. اللهم إني أسألك إيماناً يباشر قلبي، ويقيناً صادقاً حتى أعلم أنه لن يصيبني إلا ما كتبت لي، ورضاً بما قسمت لي". والدعاء هو صلة العبد بربه، وهو إلى ذلك مخ العبادة وجوهرها. وقد كان للرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم أدعية للمسلمين بصورة عامة، ولأصحابه بصورة خاصة، وفي هذا الكتاب مجموعة من أدعيته صلى الله عليه وسلم للمائة الأوائل ممن دعا لهم رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم.
