تدور الرواية حول علاقة حب وفكر بين كاتب روائي قرر اعتزال الحياة الأدبية " يوسف البحراوي " وباحثة شابة عنيدة قادمة من الريف "سحر بدوي " تُحاول الولوج إلى عالمه وإخراجه من أزمته الفكرية, فهل تنجح في ذلك خصوصاً إذا كشفت له أنها مثل بطلته في إحدى رواياته " تعشق غرس أسنانها في قشرة البرتقال الاخضر" .. وخلال ذلك تجري أحداث الرواية على خلفية سياسية وفكرية في حقبة هامة ومصيرية من تاريخ مصر هى حقبة السبعينيات ومطلع الثمانينات .
