العالمانية- تكتب بالألف في أدق التعريفات العلمية- لأنها تعني الإهتمام بشئون العالم الدنيوي، أي أنها نسبة إلى العالم الذي يعيش البشر على أرضه ويضعون القوانين التي تحكم علاقتهم بعضهم ببعض وعلاقتهم بمؤسسات الدولة. والعالماية لتحقيق ذلك تؤسس للفصل بين المؤسسات الدينية والمؤسسات السياسية، وبالتالي فهي لا تعني فصل الدين عن المجتمع كما يروج خصومها، والدليل على ذلك أن العالمانية في دول أوروبا هي التي تحمي الأديان والمذاهب وتسمح بممارسة الشعائر لكل أصحاب العقائد المختلفة. ولعل تجربة الهند هي المثال الأبرز، حيث سمحت العالمانية بأن يكون رئيس الدولة من الأقلية الدينية (مسلم) ورئيس الوزراء من الأقلية الدينية (مسيحي) في حين أن الأغلبية من الهندوس.
