نبذة النيل والفرات: هذا كتاب حاول فيه المؤلف دراسة وصايا الآباء إلى أولادهم من خلال تقسيمها إلى عصورها التاريخية التي اصطلح عليها الدارسون في عصرنا. فعقد فصلاً لها في العصر الجاهلي، وآخر في عصر صور الإسلام والراشدين، وثالثاً لها في العصر الأموي، ورابعاً: لهذه الوصايا في العصر العباسي. بالنسبة للعصر العباسي وقف المؤلف عند عام 334هـ، وهو العالم الذي تمزقت فيه الدولة العباسية وبدأ ما نصح تسميته بعض الدول والإمارات التي امتد إلى عصر النهضة الحديثة عدّه عصراً واحداً وأفرد له باباً مستقلاً، باستثناء وصايا الآباء إلى أولادهم في الأندلس إذ خصص لها فصلاً برأسه، وقد ذيل الكتاب بفصل يضم وصايا الآباء إلى بناتهم عند زفافهم. واتبع كل فصل من هذه الفصول بنماذج مختارة منتقاة من هذه الوصايا.
