ما من شك أن ملامح الدولة الأموية قوتها وضعفها إنما انبثقت من طبيعة الشخصية المتميّزة للقبائل العربية التي اتكأ عليها الأمويون في تأسيس دولتهم وتثبيت كيانها، وإستمرار نفوذها وبقائها، تلك الشخصية التي اعتمدت العصبية القبلية قاعدة لحياتها السياسية، وإتجاهاً متبلوراً لمختلف علاقاتها الإجتماعية.
إن التقدم السريع للقطعات العربية الإسلامية الذي صاحب الفتوح، يدعو إلى الدهشة ويُثير في الوقت ذاته الإكبار والإعجاب، بفضل الإنسجام التام الذي رافق عملية الفتح، في مناطق العراق وخراسان، وبلاد الشام، ناهيك عن البلاد المصرية والشمال الإفريقي.
ومع هذا الإنسجام البيِّن، والتناغم الظاهر بين تلك الجماعات المتقدمة، فإن هنالك عناصر متباينة أخفتها ظروف الفتح وملابساته، ولم تظهر على حقيقتها إلاّ بعد إستقرارها في تلك المناطق، والمتتبع لتطوّر العصبية في الجزيرة العربية قبل الإسلام، لا يجد لها دوراً سياسيّاً رئيسيّاً واضحاً، وكل ما يقال عن ذلك لا يعدو أن يكون وهماً لا حقيقة له، وكانت فرصتها الكبرى في الإسلام حين تقدمت لإحتلال مناطق العراق وبلاد الشام وامتدّ زحفها بإتجاه الأراضي الساسانية شرقاً والأراضي البيزنطية من جهة الغرب.
ويمثّل هذا الكتاب محاولة لدراسة القبائل في الجزيرة العربية، متناولاً أنسابها وأصولها، متضمناً أماكن سكناها وتنقلها هناك، ومن ثم نزوحها نحو مناطق الفتح، خاصة العراق وخراسان، حيث شكلت الإتجاهات القبلية هناك قوى سياسية مؤثرة، كانت لها اليد الطولى في إسناد أو إضعاف سلطة الخلافة في دمشق، على النقيض من تلك التي استوطنت بلاد الشام وتحقيق تلك المصالح، فما أن تباينت مصالحهما حتى انفرط عقد ما بينهما من مودة وإنسجام.
لقد أَظهرت القبائل العربية التي استوطنت العراق وخراسان تطوراً واضحاً في شخصيتها السياسية والإجتماعية، على الرغم مما كان بينها من مشاكل وخلافات أملتها طبيعة الظروف التي أحاطت بها، وبذلك فوتت فرصة الهدوء التي كانت تحلم بها السلطة في بلاد الشام، بل وضعت حدّاً لهيمنتها وبقائها، حين إجتاحتها في عقر دارها وأنزلتها من عليائها.
