ترتبط كلمة "الأسطورة" دائماً ببداية الإنسانية أو ببدائية البشر، حيث كانوا يمارسون السحر ويؤدون طقوسهم الدينية التي كانت، فيما تعالى، سعياً فكرياً لتفسير ظواهر الطبيعة. وفي هذا الكتاب دارسة يتناول من خلالها الباحث الأسطورة كمادة لعبت دورها في النشاطات الفكرية والأدبية وقبلاً الاجتماعية في المجتمعات الإنسانية على مر العصور. انطلق الباحث لوضع مادة الأسطورة في إطار تحليل علمي منهجي فعمد في بدايات هذه الدراسة إلى البحث أوليات الأسطورة ونشأتها ليتحدث من ثم عن الفرق بين الأسطورة والخرافة باحثاً في مخزون التراث العربي عن كليهما منتقلاً بعد ذلك للبحث في منطق الأسطورة وواقعها متجهاً من ثم لإبراز مدى تأثر الفن والأدب بالأسطورة لقد ناقش الكتاب أكثر قضايانا الفكرية والفنية خطورة، وليس هذا لأن تلك حاجة البحث ولكن لأنه وسيلة من وسائل إغراء القارئ على أن يرتاد ميداناً كل مرتادوه.
