"عبد الرحمن والبحر" رواية يخرج فيها "خالد حاجي" ما بين الأدب والفلسفة، ولغة البيان ولغة الفكر. في هذه الرواية يخرج "حاجي" عن المألوف، هي كتابة من نوع جديد يقول الروائي: "ففي كتابة الرواية عبر هذه الرواية أحاول أن أفتح فضاء إستشراف يدعى إليه كل من الكاتب والقارئ بغرض التأمل وفتح فضاء جديد لإستشراف مستقبل والتطلع إلى آفاق لا تمكن من التطلع إليها الكتابات الأخرى... أشعر دائماً بالحاجة إلى مخاطبة فخيال القارئ عوض الإكتفاء بمخاطبة عقله فقط، التخاطب على مستوى الأفكار...". تمثل هذه الرواية رسالة يريد إيصالها الروائي إلى القارئ العربي وهي "كيف يمكن أن نؤلف بين إنتسابنا إلى التراث وإنتسابنا إلى الحداثة"؛ عندما نقرأ الرواية نجد أنها تنتهي بالأمل على الرغم من الصعوبات التي تواجه البطل "عبد الرحمن"، فهذه الشخصية يوزعها الروائي بين عالمين، أو بين فضائين: بين حفارة التعبد وشطآن العشق، بين عوالم الصمت وعالم الصوت، فـ"عبد الرحمن" ليس بطلاً بالمعنى المألوف، لقد تعلم الصمت، فأحسن الخروج إلى عالم الصوت كما مكث في مغارة التعبد، فأحسن الخروج إلى شطآن العشق، وتعلم السباحة ليقطع البحر إلى الضفة الأخرى فينجو بنفسه حيث يغرق الآخرون. وهنا يضع الروائي شخصية "عبد الرحمن" في سياق مجتمعات ما بعد الإستعمار فيقطع معه البحر إلى ضفة الحداثة، فيتمخض عن إحتكاكه بالحداثة ما يضمن له أسباب القوة كي ينهض بذاته؛ وبهذا المعنى تكون الشخصية الروائية في هذا العمل الأدبي البارع مختلفة عن أولئك الأبطال الذين يحسدون إما إنتصار الذات التراثية، أو إنتصار الذات الحداثية في زمن الحداثة. وبهذا يكون الروائي يجمع ما بين الإثنين، وهنا تكمن فلسفته ورؤيته الفنية والفكرية لمفهوم التراث أو الأصالة، ومفهوم الحداثة، فأجاد وكان خير من عبَّر عن إلتقاء المفهومين في صيغة بعيدة عن التكلف والتزلف أو الإنحياز لإحدى المفهومين.
