هذه رواية حب ورواية شعب عانى من الشتات والمذابح في بدايات القرن العشرين، تشّ بين أوراقها رائحة بغداد في الثلاثينيات، وترى أبطال ذاك الزمان وهم يتحركون في الأزقة والشوارع الخلفية بين باب الشيخ وسوق الغزل وشارع الرشيد وباب الأغا، شخصيات نعرفها ونحبها ونعرف طقوسها وعاداتها، ومسراتها وشجونها، عثمان وسوسن وحمودي العربنجي وصبرية والقاضي محمد عبد الجليل وشموني والحاج مهدي ومريوم وجاسم وخيرية والجدة ندمي وحسينة الحسناء.
الموروث الشعبي كان بطلاً من أبطال الرواية أيضاً، طبول ومقامات وأهازيج ومنلوجات وطين خاوة وسوق الشورجة الشهير، عالم غرائبي يعج بالفولكلوريات واللهجات المحكية، السومرية منها والآشورية، مع أن الرواية تنطق باللغة العربية الفصحى، ومن هنا تأتي نكهة التنوع وشاعرية الإحساس. بالتالي، هي رواية مغمّسة بروح الشعب الذي عاش بين النهرين، وكان مرغماً أن يهاجر صوب المنافي البعيدة حتى يكتب مصيره بيديه.
