في نقطة بعيدة من الصحراء تقوم المقبرة. في قبر جديد سيدفن أحمد الأعرج. وسيرفعون رايات بيض حين يذهبون لدفنه. سيزدتد الموتى واحداً. تلك سنة الحياة كما كان أبي يردد. شوارع البلدة ظلت جارية بالسيارات والبشر. أصوات انفجارات بعيدة. أصوات مروحيات تحوم فوق جزيرة الفرات قرب الجسر. نخيل البلدة، وكما أراه من السطح، يتناقص قليلاً قليلاً. ثم يعد أحد يهتم بزراعة النخيل. تجارة ما عادت مربحة. زوجة خالي تحلب بقرتها في الفناء الخلفي للبيت، نجاة زوجة أخي كمال تكنس الحديقة الأمامية، التي شهدت جلساتنا وحواراتنا. بحججه المنطقية والباردة كان سعيد يقنعنا دائماً. يقنعنا في تبرير، وشرح، ما يجري في حياتنا، كل ما كان يقوله صحيح، إلا أن ذلك الصحيح لم يغير الجحيم الذي نعيشه. الجميع على صواب في هذا البلد، مع ذلك فنحن نموت يومياً، نموت ونشقى.
