يحوي هذا الكتاب ترجمة لمائتين من أشهر أعلام الطب والصيدلة في تاريخ العرب والإسلام الذين ألفوا كتباً أو رسائل طبية باللغة العربية مع نبذة عن حياة كل علَم وذكر أهم مؤلفاته وإيراد نصوص مختارة من أهم تلك المؤلفات. وقد حرص المؤلف على انتقاء أشهر الأعلام من جميع العصور بدءاً من فجر الإسلام حتى نهاية القرن التاسع عشر للميلاد مخصصاً فصلاً مستقلاً لكل قرن من الزمان؛ أما اختياره للأعلام فقد شمل جميع دول الإسلام من عرب وفرس وأتراك كبلاد الشام ومصر والعراق والأندلس وبلاد المغرب وشبه جزيرة العرب وإيران وتركيا وأوزبكستان وأفغانستان وغيرها. فالكتاب هو رحلة عبر الزمن ينتقل فيها القارئ من قرن إلى آخر متخطياً حاجز الزمن ليطلع على أبرز ما كُتب في الطب والصيدلة وأطرف ما روي عن أطباء الأزمان الماضية. نبذة عن حياة الدكتور علاء الدين الصغير تخرج من كلية الطب في جامعة حلب عام 1984 تخصص في طب الغدد الصم والسكري والتغذية من جامعة نيس بفرنسا عمل في عدة مستشفيات فرنسية كطبيب مساعد ثم طبيب استشاري وأجرى العديد من الأبحاث السريرية في أهم المراكز الطبية الفرنسية عضو الجمعية الفرنسية لأطباء الغدد الصم الفرنسيين، وهو حالياً عضو في الجمعية السورية لداء السكري وعضو في رابطة أطباء الغدد الصم السوريين حصل على جائزة الباسل في الإبداع العلمي لعام 2008 عن مجمل مؤلفاته التخصصية في أمراض الغدد الصم والسكري والتغذية. له كتب عديدة في الطب الباطني والصحة العامة والصحة الجنسية. نشر العديد من الأبحاث الطبية وأوراق العمل في مجال الغدد الصم والسكري باللغة الإنكليزية في عدة مؤتمرات دولية، كما نشر العديد من المقالات الطبية عن داء السكري في عدة مجلات عربية، كما قام بتحقيق العديد من المخطوطات الطبية ضمن مشاركاته المتعددة في مؤتمرات تاريخ الطب العربي والإسلامي.
