من منا لم يتساءل في حياته عن حقيقة ومنشأ الحياة، عن ظاهرة الشيخوخة أو الموت، عن تنوع وروعة الكائنات الحية التي عمرت الأرض. من منا لم يتأثر في حياته بالأجوبة المتاحة لهذه التساؤلات. هذا المؤلف يستعرض محاولة علم التطور الحيوي للإجابة عن تساؤلات، كانت وستظل، تشغل حيزاً كبيراً ومهماً من النسيج الفكري والثقافي للمجتمع.
هذا الكتاب يأتي للرد على هذة التساؤلات حيث يبدأ باستعراض مختصر للآليات الرئيسية الفاعلة في عملية التطور الحيوي، كالتنوع الوراثي، وأنماط الانتخاب الطبيعي، بالإضافة إلى ظواهر مثل الإنزياح الوراثي genetic drift، ونظرية التوازن الانتقالي balanced shift. وينتقل بعد ذلك إلى فصل نشوء الحياة، الذي يتناول الأسس الفيزيائية والكيميائية لمعالم الحياة، وفعاليات الاستقلاب الكيميائية، وتطور خازن المعلومات الذي يشتمل على مفاهيم كالاستحواذ الوراثي genetic takeover، يفترض أن تكون قد ساهمت في نشوء وتطور الخلية البدئية.
في الفصل الثالث، يتطرق المؤلّف إلى منشأ وتنوع بنية الجينوم، دور عناصر الدنا المتحركة mobile genetic elements وآليات مثل التطور المتناغم concerted evolution، ثم معالم كمقدرة الجينوم التطورية genome evolvability، ثم تطور الجينوم في مستويات التعقيد المتدرجة.
الفصل الرابع، يناقش ظاهرة التعايش بين الكائنات الحية symbiosis، ودورها المميز في بناء وتطور سلم تعقيد المتعضيات organismal complexity، كما يتطرق إلى آليات انتقال المورثات الأفقي horizontal gene transfer. الفصل الخامس مخصص لظاهرة التكاثر الجنسي في شقيها النشوئي، الذي يشتمل على جانب مورثي، وجانب خلوي.
الفصل السادس، يتناول ظهور الكائنات عديدة الخلايا، ونشوء آليات التمايز الخلوي، وذلك عبر دراسة نماذج الفولفوسين الحية volvocine وتحليل نماذج خلوية رقمية digital organism في بيئة الحاسوب، ثم مناقشة دور التوريث فوق الوراثي epigenetics في إرساء التمايز الخلوي.
الفصل السابع يتطرق إلى عملية تشعب وتطور أنواع الكائنات الحية من خلال مناقشة آليات نشوء الأنواع المختلفة، ثم يختم بنظرية التوازن المرقم punctuated equilibrium. الفصل الثامن، يستعرض ظاهرة الشيخوخة والعمر الأقصى لدى الكائنات الحية، ويناقش التفسير التطوري لهاتين الظاهرتين.
الفصل الأخير هو عودة إلى صلب موضوع آلية التطور، ومناقشة تتطرق إلى ظواهر كالتنظيم الذاتي self organizing وآليات مثل النشوئية emergence، الانتخاب متعدد المستوى multilevel selection، والانتخاب التعاضدي synergistic selection، وأخرى مرشحة أيضاً كعوامل رئيسية تتضافر أو تتنافر في معرض التحدي الكبير الذي يواجه البناء النظري لمفهوم التطور الحيوي.
