ما هي الحياة؟
السؤال الذي يطرحه عالِمِ الوراثة الإنجليزي الحائز على جائزة نوبل "بول نيرس" ويجيب عنه في كتاب "ما هي الحياة؟ فَهمُ عِلمِ الأحياء في خَمسِ خطوات" الذي ترجم إلى 24 لغة من خلال شرح خمس أفكار وهي: "الخلية"، "المُوَرِّثَة (الجين)"، "التطور بالانتقاء الطبيعي"، "الحياة كيمياء"، "الحياة معلومات".
بالإضافة إلى شرح مصدر هذه الأفكار، وبيان أهميتها، وكيف تتفاعل مع بعضها بعضاً، ليظهر لنا أنها ما تزال تتغير ويتم تطويرها مع الأيام بينما يُتابعُ علماءٌ في كافة أنحاء العالم التوصلَ إلى اكتشافات جديدة. ويعرض لنا قصصاً من تجاربه الخاصة في البحث المخبري مثل الحَدس والإحباط والحظ واللحظات النادرة المثيرة في اكتشاف رؤيةٍ جديدة أصلية.
في ضوء هذا الهم المعرفي، يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن علم الأحياء في السنين والعقود القادمة سَيوجِّهُ اختيارات العلماء بشكل متزايد في أمورٍ مثل: كيف يعيش الناس، وكيف يولَدون ويأكلون، وكيف تتم حِمايتهم وشفاؤهم من الأوبئة والجائحات. ولذلك يفسر لنا في هذا الكتاب بعض تطبيقات المعارف البيولوجية والاختيارات الصعبة، والشكوك الأخلاقية، واحتمال حدوث نتائج غير متوقَّعة. ولكن، قبلَ الانضمام إلى الجَدَلِ المُتَنامي الذي يحيط بهذه المواضيع، يجب علينا كما يقول المؤلف التساؤل أولاً: ما هي الحياة؟ وكيف تعمل؟
ستَعمَلُ المواضيعُ الخَمسة في هذا الكتاب مثل دَرجات السلّم التي تتجه صعوداً بالتدريج لتوضّح مبادئ ومفاهيم تُعرِّفُ الحياةَ على كوكب الأرض مما يُمكننا من رؤية عالَم الأحياء بعَينٍ جديدة. سيُساعدنا ذلك أيضاً على التفكير في كيف بدأت الحياة على كوكبنا؟ وكيف يمكن أن تكون لو شَهِدناها في مكانٍ آخر في هذا الكَون.
