"... لندن لا تروقني كثيراً، المشي على ضفة نهر التايمز مع ربيكا كان يشوبه دوماً نقاش حاد حول أشياء تافهة وأحياناً حول أشياء مهمة. أو أن ما يبدو لي تافهاً كان بالنسبة إلى ربيكا أكثر من مهم. أنا لا يهمني مثلاُ أن أشارك في تظاهرات المثليين والسحاقيات الكرنفالية، مطالبهم لا تعنيني، ربيكا تجد في هذا التفكير نوعاً من الأنانية. تقول ذلك من حقهم، أقول ومن حقي ألا أمشي في تظاهراتهم، ثمة مطالب ومعاناة فوق هذه الأرض أهم بكثير من مطالبة رجل الزواج من رجل آخر. كان هذا يقلق ربيكا ويغضبها فنترك النهر يوصل جريانه ونقفل راجعين بصمت، هي تفكر لا شك في أنانيتي وأنا أفكر في ضرورة تحصين أبنائي يوماً من السلوكيات الخنثوية...". تمثل هذه الرواية بمضامينها فضاءاً فسيحاً لتمثيل هذه العلاقة المعقدة، وتجريب مواجهة أفكار الذات والآخر بعضها ببعض، وكشف المعقدة، وتجريب مواجهة أفكار الذات والآخر بعضها ببعض. وكشف لجوانب سوء الفهم للقيم المجتمعية بين الشرق والغرب ولحياة الغربة بحد ذاتها، وفراق الأهل، والحنين إلى مواطن الطفولة.
