يُعالج هذا الكتاب ظاهرة إشكالية تقارُب أكبر حركتين إسلاميتين ظهرتا في القرن العشرين بالوسطين: السُنّي والشيعي، هما الحركة الإخوانية والحركة الخمينية من بعضهما البعض، ووجود تلاقيات ومشتركات فكرية بينهما أنتجت تقاطعات سياسية ظهرت وصمدت طوال ثلث قرن من الزمن. هذا التقارب يتناقض مع حركة معاكسة استمرت لاثني عشر قرنًا من مسار تعاكسيٍّ وتطور انفصاليٍّ سلكه السُنّة والشيعة في مجالي الفكر والسياسة. وقد حاول المؤلف القيام بتفكيك تحليلي لهذه الظاهرة التقاربية من حيث: الظرف التاريخي لنشوء الحركتين، والنصوص المعرفية التكوينية - التأسيسية، والمسار السياسي العملي.
