يواجه الرئيس الأمريكي باراك أوباما في فترة رئاسته الثانية مجموعة من القضايا المتعلقة بالشرق الأوسط مثل إيران وإسرائيل وفلسطين وآثار الاضطرابات السياسية العربية عام 2011، وكذلك الآثار المترتبة على تغير المناخ والطاقة الخضراء. وقد تظل بعض سياساته كما كانت عليه في فترة رئاسته الأولى دون تغيير يذكر، لكن تعيين جون كيري وزيراً للخارجية وتشاك هاجل وزيراً للدفاع في حكومته سوف يؤدي إلى حدوث بعض التغيرات. وبصورة خاصة، قد يتحول اهتمام الإدارة الأمريكية بعيداً عن الشرق الأوسط باتجاه آسيا. وقد أعلن أوباما عن عزمه استكمال فك الارتباط العسكري مع الشرق الأوسط من خلال إنهاء الحرب المستمرة في أفغانستان، وسحب معظم القوات الأمريكية منها، وربما كلها، بحلول نهاية عام 2014. وبعد مرور العقد الأول من القرن الحادي والعشرين الذي كانت فيه الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية تمثل قوة تحوّل في سياسات الشرق الأوسط، رسم أوباما مساراً يتسم بالمزيد من الحذر والبراغماتية للعقد الثاني. ومن المتوقع أن تواصل إدارته الضغط على إيران دبلوماسياً واقتصادياً، لكن بعض كبار المسؤولين في حكومته يثيرون الشكوك حول جدوى توجيه ضربة إلى إيران. كما ألمحت واشنطن إلى أنها تود تفادي التورط العسكري في سوريا.
