أوجب الله سبحانه وتعالى فريضة الصيام على عباده لأهداف وغايات نبيلة ومفيدة ومهمة، فالصوم امتحان لالتزام العبد بما أمره الله تعالى، وبذلك تتجلى فلسفة طاعة العبد لمولاه. وبالصوم يبني الإنسان إرادته، وينمي عقله، ويقوي جسمه، وتسمو نفسه، ويرتقي نحو عالم الكمال المعنوي، ويتجرد من شهواته ورغباته المادية البحتة.أما على الصعيد الاجتماعي فإن الصوم فرصة لإحداث تغيير اجتماعي إيجابي يساهم في بناء المجتمع وتماسكه، فشهر رمضان يساعد على خلق الأجواء الإيجابية التي تساهم في توليد تغيير جوهري في مسار المجتمع نحو الأفضل والأحسن. وهذا الكتاب لسماحة الشيخ عبدالله اليوسف محاولة لاستكشاف فوائد وآثار الصوم على الأفراد والمجتمعات، فالفصل الأول يسلط الأضواء علىمميزات شهر رمضان التي يتميز بها عن بقية شهور السنة. أما الفصل الثاني فيتناول فوائد الصوم وآثاره في بناء الشخصية المسلمة. وأما الفصل الثالث فيتناول دور الصوم في التغيير والحراك الاجتماعي.
