ينظر إلى العلاقات الأمريكية-الإيرانية على اعتبار أنها من أهمِّ العوامل التي تؤثر في منطقة الخليج العربي استراتيجياً. وقد ازدادت أهمية إيران في السياسة الخارجية الأمريكية بعد الحرب التي شنتها الولايات المتحدة على العراق. وفي الجانب الإيراني، فإن قضية علاقات الجمهورية الإسلامية مع الولايات المتحدة أضحت أهم قضايا السياسة الخارجية بالنسبة إلى طهران، ومن القضايا المركزية في السياسة الداخلية الإيرانية. كما أن الوضع الراهن والمسار المستقبلي للعلاقات الإيرانية-الأمريكية من القضايا التي تشغل دول الخليج العربية. تتمحور الفرضية الأساسية لهذه الدراسة حول أن مفتاح تطوير العلاقات الأمريكية-الإيرانية يكمن في أن ينظر كل طرف من الطرفين في علاقاته مع الآخر عبر منظور المصلحة الوطنية. وإذا ما فعلت الدولتان ذلك، فيبدو أن هناك من المصلحة المشتركة ما يكفي للسماح بصفقة استراتيجية كبرى بين الطرفين. أما الحجة التحليلية فهي أن الخلافات الداخلية في دوائر صنع السياسة في الجانبين إنما تمنع واشنطن وطهران من اتخاذ إجراءات حاسمة للانتقال بالعلاقات بين البلدين نحو آفاق إيجابية.
