بدءاً من العنوان [أشهد عليّ.. أشهد علينا] يمكن للقارئ أن يلمس ذلك النزوع الأخلاقيّ لدى المؤلف. إن الشهادة بحدّ ذاتها، فعل أخلاقي، والشهادة على الذات ليست مجرّد فعل أخلاقيّ، بل هي فعل تطهّري، وهذا ما يصرّح به إلياس منذ الصفحات الأولى في كتابه.. ومن أبرز الملامح الأسلوبيّة، التي تميّز كتابة إلياس، تلك اللغة التنويرية التي تحتفي بذاتها أكثر مما تحتفي بخطابها، وتحاول أن تكشف وتشفّ أكثر مما تحاول أن توضّح وتصف، وتتخلّى أحياناً عن سرديّتها لتتسلّل إلى الشعر من ساحته الخلفية، لأنّ وظيفة اللغة هنا أيضاً ليست محصورة في وعائيتها، بل تتعدّاها إلى ما هو أبعد من ذلك.. يتحرّر النصّ، عند إلياس، بوصفه المكان الذي توجد فيه ذاته. إنّ النصّ هو مكان متخيّل، فيما المكان الموضوعي هو نصّ يُقرؤ ويُكتب. هكذا يتحرر النص بحيث يصبح حسياً، ويتحرّر المكان بحيث يصبح مجرّداً، لكنّ تحرير المكان/تجريده لا يتمّ من أجل الخروج منه، بل من أجل امتلاكه، إذ بتجريده فقط يصبح المكان مكانـ (ـنا)، ولأنه مكان أخضع لعمليّة تجريد، فإن أقرب إلى المتخيّل منه إلى الواقعيّ. إنّه مكان يشبه الذات في غموضه وأثيريّته ولا تعيّنه.. كلّ هذه النصوص، التي تجدها في هذا الكتاب، هي محاولات متوازية في تأمل الذات… تلك الذات التي تشبهها نصوصها كثيراً.. زهير أبو شايب
