النيترونات تتحرك في المفاعل النووي بشكل معقد وبطريقة متعرجة ناتجة عن تكرار التصادم بين النيوترونات والنوى المختلفة ونتيجة لهذه الحركة فإن النيوترونات الموجودة في جزء معين من المفاعل تظهر بأجزاء أخرى من المفاعل وبطاقات مختلفة، ويقال عن هذه الحالة بأن النيوترونات انتقلت من المنطقة والطاقة الأولى إلى منطقة وطاقة أخرى. إن دراسة هذه الظاهرة تتم بعدة طرق ونظريات أهمها نظرية تعرف بنظرية الانتقال (Transport Theory)، كما أن هنالك نظريات أخرى ذات أهمية كبيرة في هذا المجال أيضًا مثل نظرية الانتشار (Diffusion Theory). إن مبادئ نظرية الانتقال يمكن التعامل معها بشكل سهل نسبيًا من حيث المفاهيم، والمعادلة العامة لهذه النظرية تسمى بمعادلة الانتقال النيوتروني لبولتزمان. حيث يهتم ذلك الكتاب باستعراض تلك النظريتين بشكل مفصل.
