صِيغَ هذا الكتاب بالفرنسية مرتين، الأولى كأطروحة دكتوراه دولة في الآداب والعلوم الإنسانية من السوربون، والثانية، بعد تعديل مهم، بحلة كتابٍ صادرٍ عن دار "أكت سود" (Actes Sud) وأُعيد النظر في بعض أجزائه وقت ترجمته إلى العربية ليصدر بهذه الطبعة العربية التي تُهدى للقارىء العربي. يتناول الكتاب جبران في رؤيته الإنسانية وحساسيته الذاتية في السياق الأدبي العربي الذي انغمس فيه من رأسه إلى أخمص قدميه، بصفته شاهداً على إشكالية ثقافية متعددة الوجوه، لا نزال نعالجها حتى اليوم جوهرها: مَنْ هو الإنسان العربي، أي العربي بالثقافة أياً كان انتماؤه الديني أو الإثني أو القطري أو الأيديولوجي؟ وكيف يتكوّن في عصر الحداثة، أميناً لذاته التاريخية ومخلصاً لمستقبله الإنساني المنفتح على الاحتمالات جميعها. لذا نرى جبران يقترح نهجاً ويشقّ طريقاً من دون أن يتفرّد بحقيقة، يكفيه أنه مبدعٌ اهتدى إلى مسرب من مسارب الذات العربية إلى الحداثة، ومن ثم العالمية ليُغني الثقافة العربية ويوجه المبدعين من بعده إلى بعض منابع الإبداع.
