كان جوزيف الويس شومبيتر (بالألمانية: [ːmpeːtɐ] ؛ 8 فبراير 1883 - 8 يناير 1950) اقتصاديًا سياسيًا نمساويًا. ولد في النمسا ، وخدم لفترة قصيرة كوزير مالية للنمسا في عام 1919. وفي عام 1932 ، أصبح أستاذاً بجامعة هارفارد حيث بقي حتى نهاية حياته المهنية ، وحصل في نهاية المطاف على الجنسية الأمريكية.
أحد أكثر الاقتصاديين نفوذاً في القرن العشرين ، نشر شومبيتر مصطلح "التدمير الخلاق" في الاقتصاد.

يقصد بتعبير "تاريخ التحليل الاقتصادى" تاريخ الجهود الفكريه التى بذلها الإنسان لفهم الظواهر الاقتصاديه أو- وهو ما يعنى الشىء نفسه – تاريخ الجوانب التحليليه أو العلميه من الفكر الاقتصادى. ويصف الجزء الثانى من هذا الكتاب تاريخ تلك الجهود، وذلك من البدايات المبكره التى يمكن إدراكها، وحتى آخر عقدين أو ثلاثه من القرن الثامن عشر.
