وهو يبدأ بهذا النص الأخير: الدور الذى لعبه العمل ليناقش قضية أصل الإنسان، ثم ينطلق من: أصل الحياة ليناقش القضيتين الأخريين. وبطبيعة الحال فقد اعتمد إنجلس، كما يقول كريس هارمان، على معلومات تجاوزها التقدم العلمى على مدى القرن السابع، وهو يؤكد أن كتابات إنجلس لا تزال تحتفظ مع ذلك، بأهمية هائلة، إذ إنه يطبِّق منهجًا يُعَدّ ماديًا دون أن يكون ميكانيكيا، ويواصل تحدِّيه لكل من المثالية والتوأم المفزع المتمثل فى السلوكية والسوسيوبيولوجيا.
