ما الذي نحاول أن نحلله في هذا الكتاب؟ "من المستحيل أن نحلل أي ظاهرة إلا في حدود الثوابت المحفوظة فيها". تجد هذه العبارة تطبيقها العملي هنا في هذا السؤال: لماذا نرجع ونحن في العقد الأول من القرن الواحد والعشرين (2008) إلى مرحلة تاريخية تعود إلى الربع الثاني من القرن العشرين (1924- 1953)؟ السبب أننا ما زلنا إلى الآن لم نعِ ثوابت تلك المرحلة، ولا مخزون أفكارها ذات الطابع الإصلاحي والتحديثي، بل أننا في الواقع لم نستنفدها بعد. يكفي أن نذكِّر هنا بأسئلة العواد في كتابه "خواطر مصرحة" لماذا لا نتعلم كيف نعيش؟ لماذا لا نتعلم كيف نتعلم؟ لماذا لا نتعلم كيف نتفاهم؟ لماذا لا نتعلم العيش في وسط جماعة؟ لماذا لا تتخذ أدواراً فعالة في شؤوننا المدنية والمجتمعية؟ لماذا لا ننفتح على التجارب الجديدة؟ لماذا نهضم حقوق الغير في بلادنا؟ لماذا لا نفهم ان مرارة النقد أجمل من حلاوة العيش؟؛ تلك هي أسئلة العواد عام (1925) أسئلة تكوين الإنسان الحديث وملامحه.
